(970324-SWR02.jpg) New York, NY -- FILE PHOTO -- Activists march through lower Manhattan to protest the high costs of AIDS drugs, and mark the Tenth Anniversary of ACT-UP (Aids Coalition To Unleash Power) and driect actio9n protests...On Tuesday June 6th 2001 will mark the 20th year since the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported "five young men, all active homosexuals," had turned up at three hospitals in Los Angeles, all with the same rare and potentially fatal  pneumonia, now called AIDS, Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome...According to the New York Times AIDS has killed more than 438,000 Americans and nearly 22 million people worldwide since  June 5,1981. In the US, the CDC estimates as many as 900,000 people are infected with Hunam Imune Virus (HIV) Of these, 320,000 have developed AIDS. Each year, federal health officials estimate, another 40,000 Americans  become infected with HIV. Globally, the figure was 5.3 million as of 2000. ..© Stacy Walsh Rosenstock
